I recently uploaded a new illustration on to deviantART called Box of Demon Voices 3.  I made this illustration in Adobe Illustrator CS2, and is 100% vector.

I often get asked what my process is when making an illustration and to be honest with you, it varies from piece to piece.  This one started off as a silly little doodle I made in one of my sketchbooks.  I try and reserve some time to just doodle and you can often find me camped out at a Borders with a sketchbook and my headphones.

Music is huge motivator or what I like to think as “Tools of Inspiration”.  My taste in music is fairly eccentric.  Most bands I enjoy are indie/underground that are rarely known.   But anyway… sometimes while I’m listening to tunes I doodle animals or monsters listening to music too.  That’s basically how this illustration was conceived.  I almost always sketch with a red pencil and then, if I like it, I pencil or ink the drawing.  Quite often I just jump from red pencil into Adobe Illustrator.

After making the drawing I shot a picture of it with my cell phone and placed it in an Adobe Illustrator file and started vectoring.

What is the Box of Demon Voices?  Well, its what I called an iPod (or any MP3 player) for that matter.  I actually own a Zune, but back when I didn’t have an mp3 player I would often get annoyed by the constant bragging “Check out my new iPod!” and/or the catchy poppy commercials.  Everyone was hyping these mp3 devices up that I assumed that colorful singing spirits with big smiles and rainbows would appear when listening to an iPod.

Now its just an odd series of music inspired doodles and I hope you enjoy them.
